The Sign of the Four by Arthur Conan Doyle is an atmospheric detective novel featuring the brilliant Sherlock Holmes and his loyal companion, Dr. John Watson. The mystery begins when Mary Morstan asks Holmes to investigate the disappearance of her father and a series of mysterious pearls she has received from an unknown benefactor. Their investigation leads to a long-hidden treasure, a secret pact known as the Sign of the Four, and a chain of events stretching from colonial India to Victorian London. As Holmes follows a trail of clues involving murder, betrayal, and greed, Watson becomes increasingly fascinated by Mary and the personal dangers surrounding the case. Combining detective reasoning with adventure, romance, suspense, and exotic intrigue, Doyle creates a fast-paced mystery in which seemingly unrelated events gradually reveal a hidden connection. First published in 1890, The Sign of the Four is one of the foundational Sherlock Holmes novels.
