Moby-Dick; or, The Whale by Herman Melville is a monumental novel about obsession, adventure, fate, and humanity’s struggle against the forces of nature. The story is narrated by Ishmael, a young sailor who joins the whaling ship Pequod under the command of the mysterious and determined Captain Ahab. Ahab is consumed by his desire to hunt Moby Dick, the great white whale that he blames for a previous encounter that cost him his leg. As the Pequod crosses the oceans in pursuit of the whale, the crew faces storms, dangers, and growing tensions aboard the ship. Combining adventure, philosophy, mythology, and detailed observations of whaling life, Melville explores revenge, madness, free will, and the limits of human knowledge. Moby-Dick remains one of the great classics of American literature.
