Kim by Rudyard Kipling is an adventurous coming-of-age novel set in British India at the turn of the twentieth century. The story follows Kimball O’Hara, an orphaned Irish boy who grows up on the streets of Lahore and becomes involved in the secret world of the “Great Game” of espionage between the British and Russian Empires. Traveling across India with an elderly Tibetan lama whom he accompanies on a spiritual pilgrimage, Kim moves between different cultures, languages, and social worlds. Guided by his intelligence, adaptability, and curiosity, he gradually discovers more about his identity and place in the world. Rich in descriptions of Indian landscapes, customs, and society, Kim combines adventure, espionage, spiritual exploration, and a vivid portrait of colonial India.
