A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle is the first novel to feature the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes and his future companion, Dr. John Watson. Recently returned from military service, Watson meets the eccentric and brilliant Holmes, and the two become roommates at 221B Baker Street. Their new partnership is soon tested by a mysterious murder in London, where a bloodstained room and a cryptic message leave the police baffled. Holmes uses his remarkable powers of observation, deduction, and logical reasoning to uncover the motive and identity of the killer. The novel then shifts unexpectedly to the American West, revealing the history of revenge and suffering that lies behind the crime. Combining detective mystery, adventure, and psychological drama, Doyle established many of the conventions that would define the Sherlock Holmes stories. First published in 1887, A Study in Scarlet introduced one of the most famous detective partnerships in literary history.
