The Age of Innocence by Edith Newbold Wharton is a sophisticated novel about love, social expectations, reputation, and the rigid conventions of upper-class New York society in the 1870s. The story follows Newland Archer, a young lawyer engaged to the sheltered and respectable May Welland. His carefully ordered future is disrupted by the return of May’s cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, who has separated from her European husband and challenges the strict rules of New York society. As Newland becomes increasingly drawn to Ellen, he finds himself torn between genuine love and the obligations imposed by family, class, and convention. Through elegant prose and subtle social observation, Wharton exposes the hypocrisy and limitations beneath the polished surface of the privileged world she depicts. Combining romance with sharp social criticism, The Age of Innocence explores the conflict between individual desire and societal expectations. Published in 1920, the novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1921.
