The Mysteries of Udolpho

The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe is a celebrated Gothic novel of suspense, mystery, romance, and psychological terror. The story follows Emily St. Aubert, a young Frenchwoman whose peaceful life is shattered by the death of her father. Afterward, she is placed under the guardianship of her stern aunt, Madame Cheron, who marries the mysterious Italian nobleman Montoni. Emily is taken to the remote and imposing Castle of Udolpho, where she encounters strange events, secret chambers, frightening sounds, and unsettling mysteries. As she struggles to uncover the truth and protect herself from Montoni’s schemes, Emily must confront both external dangers and her own fears. Radcliffe combines dramatic landscapes, romantic intrigue, and Gothic suspense while often explaining apparently supernatural events through natural causes. First published in 1794, The Mysteries of Udolpho became one of the defining novels of the Gothic tradition.
