Ghost Stories of an Antiquary

Ghost Stories of an Antiquary by Montague Rhodes James is a classic collection of supernatural tales blending scholarly antiquarianism with an atmosphere of quiet, creeping horror. The stories often begin with seemingly ordinary discoveries—ancient manuscripts, forgotten objects, inscriptions, or archaeological artifacts—that gradually reveal disturbing connections to the supernatural. Rather than relying on explicit violence, James builds suspense through suggestion, uncertainty, and the unsettling intrusion of the past into everyday life. With its scholarly settings, mysterious relics, and subtle psychological tension, the collection helped define the modern English ghost story and remains a landmark of supernatural literature.
