Lysistrata by Aristophanes is a brilliantly comic ancient Greek play about war, politics, gender, and the desire for peace. The story follows Lysistrata, an Athenian woman who devises an extraordinary plan to end the long and destructive Peloponnesian War. She persuades women from Athens and other Greek cities to refuse sexual relations with their husbands until the men agree to stop fighting. At the same time, the women seize control of the public treasury, striking at the financial foundations of the war. Through outrageous situations, sharp dialogue, and bold comic exaggeration, Aristophanes mocks political leaders, military ambition, and the absurdity of prolonged conflict. Beneath its humor, the play offers a striking vision of ordinary people challenging the decisions of those in power. First performed in 411 BC, Lysistrata remains one of the most famous and enduring comedies of classical Greek literature.
