The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Emma Orczy is a classic historical adventure novel set during the French Revolution. The story follows Sir Percy Blakeney, an apparently frivolous and wealthy English aristocrat who secretly leads a daring league dedicated to rescuing French nobles from the guillotine. Known only by the mysterious symbol of a scarlet flower, the elusive hero repeatedly outwits the agents of the revolutionary government. His greatest adversary is the relentless French agent Chauvelin, while his wife, Marguerite, becomes caught between political intrigue, personal loyalties, and her growing doubts about her seemingly shallow husband. Combining romance, suspense, disguise, espionage, and adventure, Orczy creates one of literature’s earliest and most influential masked heroes. First published in 1905, The Scarlet Pimpernel became enormously popular and helped establish the tradition of the swashbuckling secret hero in modern popular fiction.
