Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe is a celebrated tragedy about ambition, forbidden knowledge, temptation, and the limits of human power. The play follows Dr. John Faustus, a brilliant scholar who becomes dissatisfied with traditional learning and turns to magic in pursuit of unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasure. He makes a pact with Lucifer, agreeing to surrender his soul in exchange for twenty-four years of service from the demon Mephistopheles. As Faustus explores the powers granted to him, he struggles with doubt, pride, and the growing realization that his bargain may lead to eternal damnation. Blending dramatic intensity, dark humor, supernatural elements, and philosophical reflection, Marlowe examines the conflict between human aspiration and moral responsibility. First performed in the late sixteenth century, Doctor Faustus remains a landmark of Elizabethan drama and a powerful meditation on the consequences of unchecked ambition.
