The Duchess of Malfi by John Webster is a dark and powerful Jacobean tragedy about love, ambition, corruption, and the abuse of power. The play follows the widowed Duchess of Malfi, who secretly marries Antonio, a man of lower social status, defying the wishes of her controlling brothers, Ferdinand and the Cardinal. Determined to control her life and inheritance, her brothers employ spies and cruel methods to uncover the secret marriage, setting in motion a chain of betrayal, imprisonment, madness, and violence. Filled with Gothic atmosphere, psychological intensity, and disturbing imagery, Webster explores the destructive effects of jealousy, social inequality, and unchecked authority. The Duchess of Malfi remains one of the most important and haunting tragedies of early seventeenth-century English drama.
