Rights of Man by Thomas Paine is a political work defending the principles of the French Revolution and challenging hereditary monarchy and aristocratic privilege. Written in response to Edmund Burke’s criticism of the Revolution, Paine argues that governments derive their authority from the people and should protect their natural and civil rights. He also advocates representative government, social equality, and reforms to reduce poverty and economic inequality. Combining political philosophy with practical proposals for social reform, Rights of Man became one of Paine’s most influential works and an important statement of democratic and revolutionary ideals.
