Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes is a landmark work of political philosophy examining the nature of human beings, society, and government. Hobbes argues that without a strong governing authority, people would live in a state of conflict and insecurity, driven by fear, competition, and self-interest. To escape this condition, individuals enter into a social contract and surrender certain freedoms to a sovereign power capable of maintaining peace and order. Combining political theory, philosophy, and reflections on human nature, Leviathan presents a powerful defense of centralized authority and became one of the most influential works in the development of modern political thought.
