Main Street by Harry Sinclair Lewis is a satirical novel exploring small-town life, social conformity, ambition, and the desire for change in early twentieth-century America. The story follows Carol Kennicott, an educated and idealistic young woman who moves from the city to the fictional town of Gopher Prairie, Minnesota, after marrying the local doctor, Will Kennicott. Disappointed by the town’s narrow-mindedness, resistance to change, and rigid social expectations, Carol attempts to introduce new ideas and improve the community, but repeatedly encounters opposition and indifference. Through her experiences, Lewis examines the tension between individuality and conformity, as well as the limitations placed on women and intellectual life in provincial America. Combining sharp humor, realism, and social criticism, Main Street offers a vivid portrait of American small-town culture and the struggle to preserve individuality in a conformist society.
