The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (Los cuatro jinetes del Apocalipsis) is a landmark 1916 Spanish novel by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez that offers a devastating critique of World War The narrative follows the extended family of a wealthy Argentinian rancher, Madariaga. His two daughters marry men from different European nations—one French and one German. When World War I breaks out, the family relocates back to Europe, forcing the cousins (the Next Generation) to fight on opposing sides of the conflict. The central arc follows Julio Desnoyers, a pampered and privileged youth who starts the novel entangled in an illicit love affair, but eventually transforms into a man of honor, dying as a noble soldier on the battlefield.
