Candide by François-Marie Arouet, better known as Voltaire, is a satirical philosophical novel exploring optimism, suffering, war, and the contradictions of human society. The story follows Candide, a naive young man who has been taught that everything happens for the best. After being expelled from his comfortable home, he travels through Europe and beyond, witnessing war, violence, natural disasters, persecution, and human cruelty. Each experience challenges the optimistic philosophy he once accepted without question. Through absurd adventures, irony, and dark humor, Voltaire criticizes religious intolerance, political oppression, social inequality, and philosophical complacency. As Candide encounters both extraordinary misfortune and unexpected kindness, he gradually develops a more practical understanding of life. Combining adventure with sharp social and philosophical satire, Candide remains one of the most influential works of the Enlightenment and a lasting examination of the relationship between optimism, reason, and human experience.
