The Octopus: A Story of California by Frank Norris is a powerful naturalist novel about the conflict between California farmers and the vast economic forces represented by the railroad. Set in the San Joaquin Valley, the story follows wheat growers whose livelihoods are threatened by the Southern Pacific Railroad’s control over transportation and grain prices. As the farmers struggle against unfair rates and the seemingly unstoppable power of the railroad, tensions escalate into protest, violence, and tragedy. Norris portrays the railroad as an immense and impersonal force whose influence reaches deeply into the lives of individuals and communities. Drawing on the economic and social conflicts of late nineteenth-century California, the novel explores greed, power, exploitation, resistance, and the struggle for justice. Combining detailed social observation with dramatic storytelling, The Octopus presents a vivid portrait of American capitalism and the forces shaping the modern West. First published in 1901, it is considered a major work of American naturalism.
