Poetics by Aristotle is one of the earliest and most influential works of literary theory, offering a systematic examination of poetry, drama, and the principles of artistic composition. Focusing particularly on tragedy and epic poetry, Aristotle explores the elements that make a work effective, including plot, character, thought, diction, melody, and spectacle. He argues that plot is the central element of tragedy and examines how a well-constructed narrative should develop through a coherent sequence of actions. Aristotle also introduces important concepts such as mimesis, or artistic imitation, and catharsis, traditionally associated with the emotional effect of tragedy on its audience. Through comparisons between different forms of poetry, he considers the relationship between art, human experience, and representation. Written in the fourth century BC, Poetics became a foundational text for literary criticism and continues to influence the study and practice of drama, narrative, and storytelling.
