Anna Katharine Green was an American novelist and poet who became one of the founding figures of detective fiction. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she developed a passion for literature at an early age and achieved widespread recognition with the publication of The Leavenworth Case in 1878, a novel that became an international bestseller and established her reputation as a master of mystery. Green was among the first writers to transform detective stories into carefully constructed novels featuring logical investigation, detailed clues, and complex plots. She created several recurring detectives, including Ebenezer Gryce, one of the earliest professional detectives in fiction, and introduced Amelia Butterworth, a sharp-witted amateur sleuth who anticipated many later female detective characters. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Green published dozens of novels and short stories. Her works helped define many conventions of the mystery genre and influenced later crime writers, including Agatha Christie. Today, Anna Katharine Green is recognized as one of the most important pioneers of detective literature and a key figure in the development of the modern mystery novel.
