D. H. Lawrence (1885–1930) was an English novelist, poet, essayist, and literary critic, widely regarded as one of the major writers of early twentieth-century English literature. Born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, he grew up in a working-class mining community, an experience that strongly influenced his writing. Lawrence explored themes of human relationships, sexuality, emotional life, nature, industrialization, and the conflict between instinct and modern society. His best-known novels include Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley’s Lover. He also wrote numerous poems, short stories, essays, travel books, and plays. His poetry became particularly notable for its direct, natural style and close attention to the living world. Throughout his career, Lawrence's unconventional views and frank treatment of sexuality led to censorship and controversy. He spent much of his later life travelling and living abroad, describing his restless life as a “savage pilgrimage.” Despite the controversies surrounding his work, Lawrence came to be recognized as an important modernist writer whose exploration of human intimacy, individuality, and the effects of modern civilization had a lasting influence on English literature.
