Charles Reade (1814–1884) was an English novelist and playwright known for his vivid storytelling, social criticism, and strong interest in justice and reform. Born in Ipsden, Oxfordshire, he studied at Magdalen College, Oxford, and later became a barrister, although he devoted much of his career to literature. Reade began his literary career as a playwright and later achieved success as a novelist. His works often combined romance and adventure with criticism of social abuses, particularly the treatment of prisoners, conditions in mental institutions, and corruption within public institutions. Among his best-known novels are It Is Never Too Late to Mend (1856), The Cloister and the Hearth (1861), Hard Cash (1863), and Foul Play (1868). The Cloister and the Hearth, a historical novel set in fifteenth-century Europe, is generally regarded as one of his most ambitious works. Reade's writing is characterized by energetic plots, dramatic situations, strong characterization, and a reformist concern for social justice. During his lifetime, Reade was a highly popular writer whose novels were widely read in Britain and abroad. His combination of entertainment and social criticism made him a notable figure in Victorian literature.
