Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875–1950) was an American novelist best known for his adventure stories, particularly the Tarzan series and the Barsoom science fiction novels. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he initially pursued various careers, including military service, ranching, and business, before turning to writing. Burroughs achieved widespread fame with his first novel, Tarzan of the Apes (1912), which introduced the legendary character of a boy raised by apes in the African jungle. The book became an international success and inspired numerous sequels, films, and adaptations. His other notable works include the Barsoom series, beginning with A Princess of Mars (1912), and the Pellucidar series, which explores a prehistoric world beneath the Earth's surface. Burroughs was known for his imaginative storytelling, exotic settings, heroic characters, and fast-paced adventures. His works helped shape the development of modern adventure fiction, science fiction, and fantasy literature. Despite criticism of some of the cultural attitudes reflected in his writing, his imaginative worlds and enduring characters have left a lasting mark on popular culture.
