The Hunting of the Snark by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, is a delightfully absurd narrative poem that combines imaginative fantasy, wordplay, and comic nonsense. The story follows a peculiar crew of ten characters, each with a name beginning with the letter B, who embark on a voyage to hunt the mysterious Snark. Guided by an unconventional map and led by a somewhat bewildered Bellman, the crew encounters strange situations and increasingly surreal adventures. Through playful language, illogical reasoning, invented expressions, and unexpected twists, Carroll creates a world where ordinary rules of sense and reality are constantly overturned. Beneath its humor, the poem invites multiple interpretations, with readers finding themes of obsession, fear, uncertainty, and the pursuit of the unattainable. First published in 1876, The Hunting of the Snark remains one of Carroll’s most celebrated works of literary nonsense and a classic of imaginative verse.
