The Turn of the Screw by Henry James is a classic psychological ghost story exploring fear, innocence, secrecy, and the uncertain nature of reality. The story follows a young governess who is hired to care for two children at an isolated country estate. Soon after her arrival, she begins seeing mysterious figures whom she believes to be ghosts connected with the children’s former governess and valet. As the governess becomes increasingly convinced that the children are in danger, her fear and determination to protect them grow more intense. Yet the true nature of the apparitions remains ambiguous, leaving readers uncertain whether the supernatural events are real or the result of the governess’s troubled perception. Combining Gothic atmosphere with psychological suspense, James creates a haunting examination of obsession, repression, and the difficulty of distinguishing reality from imagination.
