Tartuffe by Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, better known as Molière, is a brilliant comedy satirizing religious hypocrisy, deception, and blind trust. The play centers on Orgon, a wealthy man who becomes completely captivated by Tartuffe, a seemingly devout and virtuous man whom he welcomes into his household. While Orgon sees Tartuffe as a model of piety, the rest of the family recognizes his hypocrisy and attempts to expose his true intentions. Through witty dialogue, comic situations, and sharp social observation, Molière criticizes the misuse of religion and the dangers of allowing appearances to replace reason. Combining farce with sophisticated social satire, Tartuffe remains one of the most celebrated comedies of French literature.
