Confessions of an English Opium-Eater by Thomas De Quincey is a pioneering autobiographical work describing the author’s experiences with opium, addiction, and its effects on his mind and life. De Quincey recounts his early struggles, his discovery of opium as a source of relief, and the increasingly complex relationship between pleasure, dependence, and suffering. The second part of the work vividly describes his extraordinary dreams and disturbing visions, blending personal confession with philosophical reflection and imaginative prose. Combining autobiography, psychological observation, and literary experimentation, the book became one of the most influential early works about addiction in English literature.
