Sun Tzu (traditionally dated c. 544–496 BC) was an ancient Chinese military strategist, philosopher, and author traditionally regarded as the writer of The Art of War, one of the most influential works on military strategy in world history. He is believed to have lived during the Eastern Zhou period, in the era known as the Spring and Autumn period, when Chinese states were frequently engaged in warfare. Very little is known with certainty about Sun Tzu’s life. Traditional accounts, especially those recorded by the historian Sima Qian, describe him as a military commander who served the state of Wu. According to these accounts, Sun Tzu gained the confidence of King Helü of Wu and helped train and organize the king’s forces. Some details of this story are probably legendary, and modern scholars continue to debate the historical identity and exact dates of Sun Tzu. Sun Tzu’s principal work, The Art of War (Sunzi Bingfa), is a concise treatise consisting of thirteen chapters on warfare, strategy, leadership, intelligence, logistics, and military organization. Rather than emphasizing brute force, Sun Tzu stresses careful planning, knowledge of the enemy, deception, flexibility, and achieving objectives with the least possible cost. His famous strategic principle is that the highest form of victory is to defeat an opponent without having to fight a major battle. The influence of The Art of War has extended far beyond ancient Chinese warfare. The work became a foundational text of Chinese military thought and later influenced military leaders and strategists throughout Asia and the wider world. Its ideas have also been applied to diplomacy, politics, business, leadership, and competitive strategy. Sun Tzu’s historical existence and authorship of the entire text remain subjects of scholarly discussion, but his intellectual legacy is unquestioned. The Art of War continues to be studied for its concise analysis of conflict, decision-making, preparation, and leadership, making Sun Tzu one of the most enduring strategic thinkers of the ancient world.
